OpenAI will retire custom GPTs on 11 December 2026

OpenAI says custom GPTs stop working on 11 December 2026. Creators must move them to plugins, and custom actions do not carry over in the move.

The news

OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs, the versions of ChatGPT that people and businesses set up with their own instructions, files and connections. According to OpenAI's help centre, they are scheduled to stop on 11 December 2026 on all ChatGPT plans, and their pages will no longer open. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until 11 February 2027. OpenAI first announced the plan on 11 September.

The replacement is plugins. When the option appears for their account, a GPT's creator can open My GPTs and choose Migrate to plugin. The GPT's instructions become a skill, its knowledge files are copied and its connected apps are added. Its chosen model, its sharing settings and its custom actions, the links that let a GPT work with outside services, do not carry over. OpenAI says rebuilding a custom action may need a custom MCP server and technical setup.

A migrated plugin starts private, so the people who used the GPT do not get it automatically. The original GPT keeps working until the retirement date but becomes read-only once migrated, and past conversations with custom GPTs stay available. For Enterprise workspaces, OpenAI plans to stop the creation of new custom GPTs on 26 October.

What it means for you

  • Any custom GPT your team relies on, for quotes, internal policies or customer answers, stops working on 11 December unless it is moved.
  • GPTs that talk to your own systems through custom actions need the most work, because those connections have to be rebuilt.
  • If your staff use a GPT made by someone else, they depend on its creator to offer a replacement.

What to do now

  1. List the custom GPTs your team uses and note who created each one.
  2. Ask each creator to publish final edits, migrate the GPT to a plugin and test it with the prompts people use every day.
  3. For GPTs with custom actions, plan the rebuild now, as it may need a developer.
  4. Once the plugin works, share it with the colleagues who need it, because migration does not do this for you.

How Didset can help

We can rebuild the links your GPTs use as connectors to your CRM, ERP and other systems, so your team's ChatGPT tools keep working after 11 December.
