The news
Microsoft has started rolling out version 29 of Dynamics 365 Business Central, the first update in its 2026 release wave 2. New online customers get it straight away. Existing online customers are notified when it is ready, and admins can schedule it for any date in a five-month update period that Microsoft says ends in February 2027.
Microsoft lists several agent changes as generally available: better purchase order matching in the Payables Agent, one task pane for the work of all agents, and a way to review what an agent wrote directly on the page. A Microsoft Copilot chat inside Business Central is in public preview, as are Expense Agent features such as AI-driven approvals and VAT calculated from expense reports. The MCP Server can now run data queries.
For online sellers, the Shopify connector can now manage Shopify B2B companies, catalogues and prices, and process order changes, exchanges and refunds. In reporting, users can automate report output, bookmark list views and run several financial reports into a single PDF, and changes to financial reports are now always logged. Manufacturers get simpler subcontracting and less manual work in quality tests.
Companies that run Business Central on their own servers must be on version 25 or later before moving to version 29. Microsoft has also stopped publishing release plans and now lists new Business Central features on its AI at Work roadmap.
What it means for you
- The update will reach your company even if nobody schedules it. After the update period and a one-month grace period, Microsoft may uninstall extensions that block it.
- If you sell to businesses on Shopify, their company accounts, catalogues and prices can now be managed with Business Central.
- Copilot chat and the new Expense Agent features are previews, so test them before your team relies on them.
What to do now
- Copy your production environment to a sandbox, update the copy to version 29 and test your extensions and integrations.
- Schedule the live update in the admin centre on a date away from your month-end close.
- Ask the makers of your installed apps to confirm that their versions work with version 29.
