The news
Since 20 October 2026, Shopify online stores check the links that lead away from the store. Links to sites Shopify knows to be malicious are blocked. Links to sites it considers suspicious show a short message with the address, and the shopper can continue or go back to the store.
Shopify first showed the message for every link to an outside website, then narrowed it on 23 October. Links to other sites now open as before. Domains connected to your store, and the Shopify and social websites it supports, never show the message.
What it means for you
- Most stores will not notice a change. Links to your connected domains and to the social sites Shopify supports open as normal.
- A website you own but have not connected to your store, such as a booking page or a second shop, may show the message.
- If a link you depend on gets flagged, the shopper sees a warning at the moment you want them to trust you.
What to do now
- Open the outside links in your menu, footer and product pages once, the way a shopper would.
- Connect the other domains you own to your Shopify store, or bring that content into the store.
