The news

Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition, which it calls "Exponential", on 28 October 2026. Outlets counted more than 150 updates, most of them about AI agents. Merchants can now connect their store to the AI assistant they already use: Gemini to manage products, orders and inventory, Microsoft Copilot alongside Outlook, Word and Excel, Meta's Muse for products, inventory and discounts, and Grok. Shopify can also be pinned to the ChatGPT sidebar, where it shows sales, sessions and conversion rate.

For shoppers, Shop Pay checkout now works inside more AI agents: Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct, with Mastercard and Visa, and Amex "soon". A skill called shop.md lets agents such as ChatGPT and Claude search more than a billion products, Shopify's own figure, and pay with Shop Pay. Every Liquid and Hydrogen storefront and checkout gets WebMCP tools, which let an agent in the shopper's browser search products, update the cart and complete checkout once the buyer approves. Shopify says every store is "agent-ready by default". The Knowledge base, where you approve the policies and FAQs that agents repeat to shoppers, is part of the same push.

Sidekick, the AI assistant in the Shopify admin, now handles multi-step work, including calculations, code and web searches, and remembers what you tell it. You can approve a plan once and let it make several changes, such as editing descriptions across a collection, and it can test suggested changes with SimGym, a separate app. Shopify Protect will let merchants write their own fraud rules and test them on past orders, but Shopify says those features are "rolling out soon". Shopify has given no dates for most other updates, and the WebMCP tools work only with agents in Chromium-based browsers for now.

What it means for you

  • More of your Black Friday sales may start in an AI chat instead of on your store, so agents need correct product details, prices, stock and policies to send buyers to you.
  • Your store is open to AI agents by default, with nothing to switch on. Agents repeat what your store and Knowledge base say, so mistakes there reach shoppers.
  • You can check orders, stock and sales from Gemini, Copilot or ChatGPT, but changes made from there are real changes to your live store.
  • Some features, such as the new fraud rules and Amex in agent checkout, are not ready yet, so do not plan your Black Friday around them.

What to do now

  1. Before Black Friday on 27 November, check your product titles, descriptions, variants, prices and stock, because agents use them to answer shoppers.
  2. Open Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base in your admin, check your returns, shipping and contact facts, and accept or reject the facts Shopify suggests.
  3. Ask an AI assistant about your own products, then place a test order through an agent that supports Shop Pay, and check that the order, discount and shipping arrive as expected.
  4. If you connect an AI assistant to your store, start with questions about sales and stock, and check any change it makes in the admin.
  5. Avoid large theme or app changes in the week before Black Friday, and try Sidekick's bigger plans on a copy of your theme first.
