Shopify's Knowledge Base app closes on 15 January 2027

The facts AI agents tell shoppers about your store now sit in the Shopify admin. Stores with over 1,000 facts in the old app must re-add them by 15 January.

The news

On 26 October 2026, Shopify moved its Knowledge base into the store admin, under Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base. The Knowledge base holds the facts AI shopping agents use when someone asks about a store, such as returns, shipping, contact details, gift services and brand values. Agents read it through Shopify's Storefront MCP, in the Shop app and on other AI platforms.

It replaces the separate Knowledge Base app, which closes on 15 January 2027. Stores that used the app with up to 1,000 facts had the facts they wrote or edited moved over and published, so they need do nothing. Stores with more did not have their facts moved, and must add the ones they want to keep before 15 January. Shopify says it emailed those stores.

Shopify also drafts facts from the store's own pages, and each draft links to the page it came from. Drafts reach AI agents only after the merchant publishes them. Facts that come from the admin, such as store policies and contact details, are published as soon as Shopify creates them. A store holds up to 1,000 facts, and a store behind a password cannot be scanned, so it shows only the facts from the admin.

What it means for you

  • When a shopper asks an AI assistant about your returns or delivery, the answer comes from these facts. Wrong or missing facts mean wrong answers.
  • Policies and contact details from your admin go live at once, so they need to be right in the admin.
  • If the old app held more than 1,000 facts, they will no longer be available after 15 January unless you add them again.

What to do now

  1. Open Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base in your admin and read the facts that are already published.
  2. Go through the drafts Shopify made from your pages, fix the wording and publish the ones that are right.
  3. Check your store policies and contact details in the admin, because they publish by themselves.
  4. If Shopify emailed you about the move, add the facts you need before 15 January 2027.
  5. After you change a page, use Request rescan so the facts follow. A rescan can take up to 48 hours.
